Reasons Why I'm Excited for my 20's

With my 20th birthday only a couple months away, I’ve been thinking about all of the things that I am excited for in this third decade of my life. As you get older, it is easy to over-reminisce about your younger years, but I’d rather focus on all the good still to come! Obviously turning 20 is very different from turning 50, but leaving my teenage years still feels like a big milestone. As long as I have as much love and joy in my life as I’ve had these past 20 years, I can’t wait for my future. Here is my list of reasons why I’m excited for my 20’s.

Fashion peaks in your 20’s

In your 20’s, you are still young and pretty, but fashion isn’t all about showing off your body the way it is for a lot of women in college. You can be modest and elegant, but also trendy. Plus, at this stage of life you can afford to spend money on clothes because you don’t have kids to take care of yet.

My city era

I want to live in a big city for at least a couple of years in my 20’s. I want to have my go-to restaurants and parks and other places where everyone knows my name. I also think I could match the lively urban energy well. This dream is mostly inspired by How I Met Your Mother. I have multiple friends who’ve already committed to sharing a New York City apartment with me, so they better not bail.

Wedding season

Going to my best friend’s weddings will be the most fun and wholesome time. What could be better than a big dance party reunion with all your friends where everyone is wearing fun dresses, eating good food, and probably listening to epic throwbacks? Being a bridesmaid or maybe even a maid of honor once or twice will be the cherry on top.

Living with roommates

I adore living with roommates. I’ve been lucky enough to have had only the very best roommates so far, so they’ve made it easy for me to enjoy. I never want to live alone because I love having friends to wake up to in the morning or come home to debrief with at night. I also think I would feel lonely without them. In my 20’s I plan to always live with roommates.

No more tiers

Greek life tiers and high school social circles don’t matter anymore when you’re in your 20’s. I don’t think they should matter now in college either, but with the way Greek life works, unfortunately they do have an effect. As you mature, these kinds of things aren’t important anymore and the only thing that matters is that you are a good, kind person.

Start making real money

In my 20’s will be the first time I have a job with a salary and start making real money. This is an exciting prospect because, as I mentioned in my last post, I am currently broke. Also, starting my career and hopefully getting to do work that I’m passionate about is so exciting.

Traveling

I hope to travel a lot in my 20’s. My parents lived in London in their 20’s and traveled around Europe for the 4.5 years they lived there, so they’ve inspired me to explore as much of the world as I can while I’m young. My plan is to be very thrifty in every other area of my life so that I can make this dream a reality.

Maybe Emily in Paris has over idealized my expectations for my 20’s, but I know I can make this time of my life as magical and memorable as I want it to be. I’m proud of the confident, ambitious, happy person that I have become as I enter adulthood. Finally, thank you to every person who has made these past 20 years so wonderful, you are incredibly loved!
